Access to clean water

While we were installing the Solar Hot Water system, it became evident that it required storage tank, for controlling the water flow pressure. At the same time, there was a disruption of water supply to the school, and no sign of when the supply would be reconnected.

The staff started drawing unclean water from the local stream, which had to be boiled to be sterilised. Obviously, children didn’t understand that this was necessary to prevent infection with water-borne parasites and were drinking unclean water.

We immediately used funds to install a huge, freshwater reserve tank, on top of a purpose-built tower. Since then, there have been other interruptions to supply, where the reserve tank has fulfilled a vital provision.

Recently, the Provincial Government laid new water mains to the entire village. Hopefully, this will ensure a maintained supply. The freshwater tank still serves the Solar Hot Water supply, allowing a 66% reduction of the amount of wood burnt, to heat water.
