EcoSan Toilets
Safe sanitation is essential for health, dignity, and wellbeing, particularly in a school environment.
We have installed EcoSan toilets at Rugando Parents School to provide a sustainable, hygienic sanitation solution that does not rely on water. The system is now in place and will be ready for use once the floors and walls are completed.
How EcoSan Toilets Work
Unlike traditional pit latrines, which require a new pit to be dug once the old one is full, EcoSan toilets operate as a closed, water-free system.
When the first chamber is full, it is sealed and left to compost for 8–9 months. During this time, a second chamber is used. Once composting is complete, the material can be safely used on crops, turning waste into a valuable resource rather than an environmental hazard.
This system improves sanitation, reduces water use, and supports sustainable food production.
"EcoSan toilets provide a safe, sustainable solution that protects health while supporting long-term independence."
